Navigating Conflict as a Leader

Dr. Cornell graduated from the Purdue University CVM in 1988, returning to complete a Ph.D. in cancer biology and then joined the academic faculty at the University of Georgia. During her 18 years at UGA, Dr. Cornell served in many leadership roles, including Chief of Staff for Surgery, Interim Director of the Teaching Hospital, the Director of Continuing Education and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. In 2012, Dr. Cornell was chosen as a fellow in the Southeastern Conference Academic Leadership Development Program and participated in the yearlong leadership-training program. Since then, she has held leadership roles in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Examination Committee, President of the International Veterinary Communication Institute for 3 years and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Veterinary Leadership Institute for 10 years. She currently serves as a lead facilitator for the train-the-trainer program taught each year by the Institute for Healthcare Communication (IHC) and in this role has trained over 330 veterinary faculty from 36 veterinary schools. As a consultant for the IHC, Dr. Cornell has developed and delivered educational materials regarding communication within veterinary teams, disclosure of medical errors, delivering feedback and conflict resolution. Over the course of her career Dr. Cornell has received numerous awards and accolades. Dr. Cornell is committed to helping to improve the veterinary profession through the training of veterinary professionals in the essential professional skills of leadership and communication.
